Medical care in Panama is a bargain compared to the states. You get top of the line care even if you don’t have health insurance for less than what it would cost for your percentage of the bill back home. At least that’s how it worked out for the hubs and me. Your health insurance probably even covers you while travelling and living abroad. I would double check to be sure though. You don’t want to be counting on something that might not be there to back you when something medical does come up.
But how about covered via Medicare, Medicaid, or the VA? Are they covered abroad? What happens to them when they decide to move abroad to enjoy the tropical life at a fraction of the cost of living in the states?
Everyone is free to get individual health insurance from the US that covers you while living or travelling abroad, or you can do what the hubs and I are looking into right now…getting Panamanian health insurance! There are dental plans and even international coverage for those globetrotting after their big move to Panama.
Here are the companies we are looking into and I suggest you do the same. Get quotes and compare prices just like back home! Some of the plans available are HMOs, but the network of doctors are international, including great selections to choose from in the states.
